Mikoto is about a head or so shorter than Zidane. She has a similar hair style, but differentiates in the fact that she has pink barrettes in her hair as well as a pink ribbon tied to her tail. History:
She was created just one year before the game starts just in case both Kuja and Zidane failed their duties as “angels of death” making her the thirdand last of the “angels.” Zidane and the others first spot her when they land at Terra, but rather than greeting them she leads them on a cat and mouse sort of case to her 'home' the Genome Village of Bran Bal. It's Eiko who first spots her in the village and informs her to tell Zidane to meet her at the town's laboratory. It is then when she would explain the purpose of the village and informs Zidane the basics of his past before asking him if he would like to meet Garland. After bumping into several of Zidane's friends, they end up before the place where Garland would be waiting for him. Mikoto warns him that he may want to say good bye to his friends. She leaves him there after he goes in and heads back to work.
Soon after, Kuja's Ultima hit Terra and destroyed the Genome village. The place was burning down and Zidane and Garnet went around rescuing many of the Genomes. Mikoto was still in the Lab when Zidane found her. This time, she was no longer working, but instead staring at the keyboard, accepting her fate. It took a while of coxing, but Zidane manages to convince her to leave the place. During this time, she tells Zidane her name, Mikoto, and with her being the last of the Genome's to rescue, she climbed aboard the Invincible along with the rest of the team.
When they arrived at Gaia, Mikoto, along with the other Genomes, are taken to the Black Mage Village to live with them. At the time, this was fine with Mikoto as well, since as Vivi had said they were all merely vessels. She felt a strange pang of emotion once Zidane and the others decide to leave and fight Kuja. It was completely irrational for them to do so. They knew what kind of power he had, and yet they think they can come close to it and even dare to think that they can oppose him? Needless to say, she would have ranted to them about it if it wasn't for the fact she got distracted after her "brother" told her to "make friends" with the Black Mages.
After that, Mikoto knew that whatever would happen next, would truly be a sight to see. She hitched a ride on the Red Rose and didn't show herself until after Necron was destroyed, and tells Beatrix that the others were alive. Afterwards, Mikoto sensed that her "brothers" were still alive and went to find them.
Mistless
She was the one who helped Zidane back from the Iifa tree to the Black Mage Village. Due to her ability, she’s always sensed Kuja, but never made any note of it. She did respect his personal space and if he wished to sulk for the rest of his time on Gaia with the world thinking he was dead, it was up to him. As for Zidane, she did not feel as if she fit in with his other family on Gaia and spent her first year in the Black Mage Village as the head of the Genomes.
They quickly got into the pace of doing things themselves that her own temporary purpose there felt unnecessary, so she left to hone her skills as the “third angel of death” and decided that would be her purpose until she found another along the way. This does not mean that she was out to destroy Gaia – the entire act itself would be pointless without the Iifa tree and the fact that Terra was destroyed. She simply wished to see the potential she had and if she could match her “brothers” one day.
From what she heard from the Tantalus, Zidane once left on a journey to find where he came from, for his family. When he failed and returned home, he realized that his “family” was right there. The story was oddly touching, so much in fact that she decided to try it, in hopes to find her own purpose, not entirely realizing what the story meant at the time.
It was her second impulsive move; to travel Gaia as a wandering freelancer and hone her skills. Of course, this didn’t mean she left right away. She ended up practicing fighting the monsters within the woods before entirely leaving the safety of the Black Mage Village.
On the beginning of her journey, she started practicing black magic. She had already learned the basics of black magic from the Black Mages. Fire was a handy little spell to use to keep warmth at night. Add blizzard to that mix and she could have clean water as well. She was thankful for them and had also been there when Vivi left for his final resting place before he stopped. At the time, she couldn’t exactly say she felt sorry for the poor soul, but she did feel a pang of sadness at the thought of the “stopped” mage, although, that could have just been her brothers’ influence on her psyche. After learning blizzara, thundara, and fira, she decided it was time for the next step: Flare. So, it was a bit cocky at the time, but she believed she could do it. The attack worked rather randomly, more often than not the spell turned on her. It was inevitable afterwards that she gave up on expanding her use of black magic soon after. The only mage she knew that could teach her, she would have rather not ask from, lest his dreary talk gets to her and she ends up bludgeoning him with a book to snap out of it.
Anyways, after her little disaster with flare, she had learned just how important white magic was. With a lack of constant flow of potions and inns, she had to rely on her healing magic to patch herself right back up or, if she was too tired to do so, rest inside a cave or tent until she healed enough to cast cure. She quickly found that she was actually quite talented at white magic, mastering it quicker than she could have imagined. It did help that she managed to explore the library of Alexandria – when Zidane had announced his return – and observed “Dagger” as she healed the injured long ago.
Of course, her journey wasn’t only about expanding her abilities in battle. She grew and defined her own personality. Each village she stopped along her journey affected her. She learned more about the people of Gaia and soon the old thought of “Gaian things” to refer to things that were strange to her was fading out of her mind. Mikoto began to accept living on this once strange planet, as well as become more humane, rather than appearing like that empty shell that Zidane had once been so afraid of becoming. She’s become much more flamboyant over the years, but she still is the milder of her two brothers. In fact, she is straight laced; often acting tight bound and not very loose as Zidane was. She often seems much more mature than either of her brothers, at least until one says something that infuriates her. Then, Mikoto would sputter, spout, and often turn to violence if she has to in order to get her point across.
Lately, she has been feeling a bit more anxious that she had been in years. She couldn’t explain it, but she does keep note to keep an eye out for anything strange. If you now ask her of the reason why she is on a journey, she would simply reply "because I can," not knowing the real reason herself. It would be easy to describe her as a restless soul, much to her chagrin.
Abilities/Skills:
Mikoto has always had the uncanny ability to sense either of her brothers, as well as just how they are doing. At times when this bond is stronger, she may even witness the exact location that they are in. Unfortunately, her powers weren’t well trained ten years ago, so her "readings," as of then, work only when they are within well . . . Just how far was the Red Rose from the Iifa Tree? Mikoto has managed to refine that ability over the ten years to be able to use it when she needs to rather than unintentionally and/or struggling with it. She tends to avoid this ability out of respect for her siblings as long as they don’t do anything too “stupid.”
It can be assumed that, by her appearance, she make also take after Zidane's abilities. But, since she is more of a neutral character in actions and thoughts between the two of her brothers, her magic/abilities/fighting-style/etc. would have taken after more from the brother how would teach her, if they had taught her, how to use her powers. Since Mikoto didn’t do either of those things, I’ve decided that she became almost like a paladin – in the sense that she has white magic and attacks with a weapon, not that she carries around a large sword like Beatrix. Instead, she does carry a dagger, but tends to use a rather heavy book or tome instead for physical attacks, like smacking someone on the top of the head because they were acting rather “stupid” in her opinion. As for black magic, she tried to master it first actually. Her first try with flare was successful, but acted in a strange manner. It chased after its enemies. Her second try exploded itself on her. The next tries after it were rather random as well, so she does try to avoid using too much black magic.
As of the game, her physical abilities appear better than a normal human. She was able to keep a good distance between Zidane and co. while at the same time avoiding the monsters she may have nearly come in contact with. Ten years did not weaken this ability, if anything, only strengthened it.
To sum it up her abilities are as follows:
